James Butterworth
Professional Background
My clinical and academic interests stem from a love of microsurgery and commitment to education. As a result, a large part of my practice is devoted to autologous breast reconstruction through a variety of flaps. Additionally, we have worked hard to build a thriving multidisciplinary lymphatic program aimed at both prevention and symptom management through conservative and surgical measures. Research opportunities coming from these arenas are abundant due to such high-volume practices and we have many faculty members and residents, who are passionate about moving the needle forward based on our experiences. As the program director of our residency program, educational efforts are at the forefront of my daily life. I work closely with other faculty members and trainees to continue to make improvements to all aspects of our training program. Stagnation is regression, so constant change is implemented and trialed. Providing considerable input and ownership to the residents has paid off generously by making our program an incredible place to train. This commitment has naturally lent itself to becoming involved in educational efforts at a national level, which is where the focus of my societal involvements in ACAPS, ASPS, and ASRM lie.
